Menstruation, Ovulation, and Pregnancy

If you have been trying to conceive then you most probably are acquainted with the term, DPO. if you are not, then we are here to clear it out for you. DPO stands for days post ovulation. Around the middle of every menstrual cycle, one of the ovaries releases a matured egg during ovulation. The egg then travels down the fallopian tube.
If it happens to meet a sperm there, fertilization occurs, resulting in pregnancy. Usually, 5 days leading to ovulation and the day of ovulation are considered to be the most fertile days for a woman. It is commonly called the fertility window. Since the sperm can survive in the female body for 3-5 days and the egg remains viable just for 24 hours, having unprotected sex during these days enhances the chances of pregnancy.
However, in the absence of fertilization, the uterine lining sheds two weeks after ovulation. This causes menstrual bleeding.

What To Expect From a 21 DPO Pregnancy Test

If fertilization occurs post ovulation, then the zygote will divide to form an embryo on its way to the uterus. After about 8-12 days, the embryo will get implanted in the lining of the uterus. After implantation, a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin gets released which helps to maintain the uterine lining. It is this hormone whose level is estimated to determine if you are pregnant or not.
At-home pregnancy tests will use antibodies to detect HCG in your urine. Immediately after implantation, only trace levels of Hcg are secreted. However, it shoots up during the first few weeks of pregnancy. In fact, it doubles up every 48 hours, for the first four weeks.
